The Angel in the House

The year is 1899, Victorian England. Mrs. Edmund Brown, socialite and admired wife of textile tycoon Sir Edmund Brown III, is the epitome of femininity and grace; when she throws her infamous New Year's party, you'd be remiss to not attend. But when a mysterious guest shows up uninvited and a dead body is found in the garden, secrets from her past start to emerge. Inspired by the poem of the same name, The Angel in the House is a feminist Victorian thriller about women on the brink, a secret cult about to implode, and Industrial England. Revenge, blood, and cake...all on one plate.

The explanations unspool later, as does a biting indictment of reactionary, male-promulgated Victorian concepts like “natural order”—just another bracing plot twist in Porkalob’s script, in which the politics and the lurid goings-on mesh and balance stylishly.” -Seattle Magazine

Two women, the same name, and a love story that is re-written every day. Alex & Alix is a queer lovestory about endings, beginnings, and memory loss. Inspired by contemporary neuroscience, bodied by intersectional femme representation, the play is also a metaphorical representation of mathematical relationships between brain neurons and recall science.

Originally developed as a 15 minute play in collaboration with Infinity Box Theaters 2016’s “Thought Experiments on the Question of Being Human” festival, Alex & Alix received support from SIS Productions to develop the piece into a 60 minute one act play in their 2019 “Represent! A Multi-Cultural Playwrights Festival.”

7th and Jackson

  • WRITTEN AND DIRECTED BY: SARA PORKALOB

  • PRODUCED BY: CAFE NORDO

  • PREMIERED JULY 2019

On Friday nights, three best friends meet in the alley outside their favorite place, an underground Seattle speakeasy hosting touring jazz legends, home to raucous gambling, and even louder dinner parties. Lee, Min, and Ada are unlikely playmates but they all share the same dream: to own and run their own restaurant and jazz club. When the bombing of Pearl Harbor and rising WWII tensions tear apart their homes, they make a sacred promise to keep their dream alive. Spanning three decades, 7th and Jackson pairs local history with cultural diaspora and live music, all on one plate.

“Made more poignant by the fact that it all takes place blocks from where you sit, it’s a rich portrait of the time—which deserves to be toured to or staged by every high school in the state.” -Seattle Magazine

“Hurrah for Café Nordo’s dramatic contribution to local history with this piece of meaningful musical artistry.” -The Globalist

The Lamplighter, A New Musical

BY: JUSTIN HUERTAS, KIRSTEN DELOHR HELLAND, AND SARA PORKALOB

In a magical land, the world’s lamplighter (care-taker of the stars) and her daughter live in comfortable isolation; everything they could possibly want, they have. When the Lamplighter doesn’t return home from work, her daughter must venture out to find her before all of the stars in the night sky go out. A multi-generational story about adventure, magic, and the power of love. Initially conceived as an ensemble piece of actor/musicians, the cast size is flexible.

The Lamplighter is an original musical in development, conceived in residency at Village Theatre. In June 2018, it received a self-produced reading at 18th and Union.
